I thought that tracing the meanings and interpretations of capoeira songs would be an interesting project. There are so many old songs which have lost much of their original meanings through personal interpretations and agendas. This is definately a part of the ever evolving art of capoeira, but it would be great to find the various meanings that are given from various capoeira lineages and see if they match up.
So this section will be an ‘open’ forum that will be for the public to help decifer and contribute to the Domínio Público songs. (public domain).
Just a few pointers so that we can focus our energies:
1. If you can state where you obtained the knowledge from (which teacher from which group and what lineage they come from), or whether it is a personal interpretation. If you know the orginal author of this song that would be great too!
2.If you have a different version of the lyrics, or more lyrics to add, write them down, and let us know where that knowledge came from too.
3. If you could also state when you would sing this song, in what situation or circumstance this song would be sung.
4. This section is for public domain songs only, as these songs are what I would like to focus on.
3. Not everyone’s contributions will be published. The reasons will mainly be:
a. your interpretation has already been explained by someone else.
b. you are giving a negative view about someone elses interpretation or someone elses teacher or group.
c. I haven’t gotten around to proof reading it yet.
Lastly, thankyou for contributing, this will be an interesting journey I think and one that is definately long overdue. Good luck!
Here are a few songs that I think would be great to start with:
VOU MANDA LECO
Vou manda leco
Vou manda oia (chorus)
I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU A LECTURE
I am going to teach you
I am going to give you…
Camungere como ta como ta
Como vai vocmice (chorus)
Como vai de saude (chorus)
Para mim e prazer (chorus)
Camungere how are you how are you?
How are you going? (chorus)
How is your health? (chorus)
It was a pleasure to meet you (chorus)
Abalou capoeira abalou, se abalou deixa abalar
Abalou capoeira abalou
Abalou le abalou la

Cascade capoeira cascade
Cascade here cascade there
OLHA QUEBRA GEREBRA
