Dias Gomes- Capoeira the artist, the athlete, the poet

Posted on 14 April 2008 by chan

This is a quote that was pinned up in Mestre Moraes’s Academy when I was visiting Bahia in 2001-2002.
I thought it was particularly beautiful.

Dias Gomes, l923-1999

Capoeira is the fight of ballerinas. It is the dance of the gladiators. It is the dual between comrades. The game is a dance, it is a perfect symbiotic dispute between force and rhythm, poetry and agility. Unique because the movements are commanded by the song. The submission of forces, of rhythm, of violence, of melody; a subliminal antagonist.

In capoeira, the contestants, are not adversaries, they are “comrades”. They do not fight, they pretend to fight. They look genially, giving an artistic vision to combat. Above the spirit of competition. They have a feeling of beauty. The capoeirista is an artist, is an athlete, is a player and a poet.

Dia Gomes.

Your dream, your desire, lives like the sunrise, day by day.

    Hey, Chan!

This quote was actually in one of Nestor Capoeira’s books too, and it’s one of my absolute favourites. His translation was only slightly different:

“Capoeira is the fight of dancers. It is the dance of gladiators. It is a duel between comrades. It is game, it is dance, it is dispute – a perfect symbiosis of force and rhythm, poetry and agility. Unique in that the movements are dictated by the music and the singing. The submission of strength to rhythm. Of violence to melody. The sublimation of antagonisms.

In capoeira the contenders are not adversaries, they are ‘camaradas’. They do not fight, they pretend to fight. They seek – cheerfully – to give an artistic visage to combat. On top of the spirit of competition, there is a felling of beauty.”

The capoeirista is an artist and an athlete, a competitor and a poet.”

    Hope you’re doing well!
